Department of Physics
The Department of Physics was established in the year 2015 with one UG Course (B.Sc Physics), which is recognised by the University of Kerala. We aim to provide a solid foundation in all aspects of Physics, to show a broad spectrum of modern trends in physics, and to develop experimental, computational, and mathematical skills of students. The teaching-learning process is framed in such a way that it bridges the gap between the higher secondary and postgraduate levels of physics by providing a more or less complete and logical framework in almost all areas of basic Physics.
The department has highly talented teaching faculty, headed by Prof. Y. George. Our department has maintained high academic standards with a number of ‘A’ grade achievements per semester. To motivate, encourage and create a competitive spirit among students an ‘Achievement Board’ is displayed in the department.
The duration of the UG course is 3 years (six semesters) which deals with 14 core papers in Physics along with 3 practicals.
To attract outstanding students from other departments, we offer “Energy Physics”as our open course. This paper gives emphasis on renewable sources of energy, their availability, and application. We also provide a value-based add-course on “MS EXCEL”, a tool that equips students to develop their career-related skills.
In order to enhance the talents of students, our department gives emphasis on project work. This helps the scholars in developing experimental and data analysing skills.
Physics Lab
“We forget what we hear
We remember what we see
We understand what we do”
The department provides a well-equipped laboratory to provide an experimental foundation for the theoretical concepts taught in classrooms. Students are given an opportunity to verify experimental observations and draw conclusions. Laboratory helps students in learning how to be patient and careful while taking observation and hitherto calculating inference. Moreover, computers with internet facilities are made available in the laboratory itself. Our lab has a separate dark room facility for the students.
VISION:
- To develop a scientific approach among students.
- To create a strong interest in Physics so that students can further improve themselves through self-study.
- To achieve academic excellence through innovative teaching and learning processes.
- To develop and forward other frontier areas of current research which includes Nanoscience, Astrophysics, High Energy Physics, Plasma Physics, Photonics, and Microwave technology.
MISSION:
- To provide quality learning and equipping students for higher education, teaching and research.
- To provide students with state-of-the-art knowledge in Physics to prepare students to compete globally.
- To excel in quality teaching and to keep pace with contemporary research.
- To develop students’ sensitivity to contributing to the betterment of society through knowledge in physics.
- To make the students accept the challenges in Physics and effectively disseminate the knowledge of Physics to the coming generation.
- To create a sense of ethical responsibility among students.
NATIONAL WEBINAR
The Department of Physics conducted a national webinar on 1st October 2020. Around 120 participants took part in the webinar.
The topic of the webinar was “NANOSCALE SCIENCE: Size and shape dependent properties”.
The Principal Dr. K. M. Francis delivered the Presidential Address.
Prof. Y. George, Head of the Department, Physics, felicitated and welcomed the distinguished chief guest Dr. Jijimon K. Thomas, Head of the Department, Physics, Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram.
The keynote address at the webinar was given by Dr. Jijimon K. Thomas.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Mrs. Aswathy Krishna P, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics.
The concept of the webinar was interesting and enriched with knowledge of how nanoscience was developed by taking ideas from nature. The webinar also focused on its ultra small scale structure, and its unique and interesting properties. This made the event a grand success.
