Message from the Founder

Education for Just, Effective and Open Society

Catholic Church is the largest provider of higher education in the world. In these institutions we accept anyone regardless of religious affiliation, caste, color, nationality or civil status. “That all may have life and have it in abundance”. (St John 10/10) In these biblical lines no one is excluded from receiving the life in abundance which is the ultimate aim of education. The vision of our higher education is explained clearly by the ‘Office of Education and Culture’, Catholic Bishop’s Conference of India integrating from the guidelines and reflections of the Congregation for Catholic Education, published in October 2002. “Education is to teach the students to live, to discover the deeper meaning of life and of transcendence to learn, to interact with others, love creation, think freely and critically, find fulfillment in work, plan their future, or in one word to learn to be’. It is in and through education that one can hope for a more human and a humane future and a more harmonious society” (“Consecrated persons and their mission in schools’82- 84).

The higher education institutions of the Malankara Syrian Catholic Church are designed to be ‘Centers of Global Intellectual Communities’ committed to holistic personal formation, interdisciplinary inquiry and research that produces service oriented stalwarts. Our vision for higher education can be summarized from the Apostolic Constitution ‘Ex Corde Ecclesiae’ of St. Pope John Paul-II published in 1990, which emphasizes the role of higher education and enumerate principles and norms that are to be espoused, were the core function of teaching and learning is inter disciplinary study, that translate learning into purposeful action where values are inculcated and lived.

Our Higher education institutions shall give due importance to the following areas:

Academics and training.

This is an essential component in building up a competent resilient generation, engrossed with enthusiasm and confidence that enables them to enhance their knowledge and skills that are vital for advancement of their achievements in life, both socially and professionally.

Education for a Purpose.

The present day generation should be taught to serve the less fortunate with empathy, promoting selfless community service in a more all-encompassing manner, which has become alien to a highly sophisticated reclusive social structure. This will mold generous and zealous patriots who will bring equality and justice in society.

Information and witnessing.

The higher education sector should disseminate required information in a globalized world condensed into a microcosm Moral and ethical social values to be diffused, by creating awareness to bear witness to Christian and universal values that will form a more viable and egalitarian society, assimilating cultural, religious and social differences, which is indispensable for a healthy human life. Education is vital: “our efforts at education will be inadequate and ineffective unless we strive to promote a new way of thinking about human beings, life, society and our relationship with nature.” “Laudato Si’ Pope Francis. By these words His Holiness describe the connection between environmental, economic, social and cultural systems, which education can not ignore.

Research and Scholarship.

According to the new education policy 2020 which envisions holistic growth and developments of the human person, from the very young age to the university level, will be achieved only by systematic skill based technological learning through time bound pedagogic strategy to endure any challenge, and by empowering all through research and scholarship. Our mission is primarily to create new knowledge utilizing all technological and modern resources to cultivate life skills that will motivate students to learn systematically, for lasting results.

Orientation for Dialogue.

Our higher education hubs admit all without any discrimination irrespective of caste, creed or faith. We are laid out in a social and cultural milieu; where there is highhanded diversification based on multiple differences, that is experienced within our social circumstances. We integrate everybody in our campus and make all feel welcome, and respect each one’s belief. We follow the example of the company of Jesus Christ, where all are accepted, the outcaste, strangers, sinners, women and the powerless. This is based on love, justice and peace that form our higher education institute, which is more comprehensive, were flows the way of being, teaching and learning.

Integrated student life.

Life in the campus should reflect the space that takes care of the whole person, the purpose of which is to form not only competent scholars and professionals, but also men and women capable of leading a meaningful life: spiritually, morally, emotionally, socially and intellectually highlighting human values to imbibe a holistic personal experience. Efficient organization of the student community will help them to equip themselves to address the present day crisis and problems of life, like poverty, hunger and injustice, which is integral for the significant human development Conclusion.

The landscape of the higher education sector is changing in a fast pace, but the benefits for the student community is gaining unmatched momentum. The challenges and the concerns in the digital world are highly hazardous for the faculty too, who should update themselves to the escalating changes that is happening in a technology savvy society. They should ensure what skills and competence, do our students need to be successful and effective in the modern epoch. They should be made proficient in adapting themselves to every changing situation. Students should develop a sense of wholeness, that is more comprehensive and compassionate and lead a life of purpose and integrity.
