Department of chemistry
The Department of Chemistry started functioning since the inception of Mother Theresa College in 2014. The department offers First Degree programme in Chemistry with Mathematics and Physics as complementary courses under Choice Based Credit and Semester System. Currently, the department has four competent faculty members with three Ph.D. holders, headed by Dr. Mary Dorothy A. At present, the number of students that get enrolled every year is thirty six. Aiming to enable students to meet global environmental issues through chemical education, we offer ‘Environmental Chemistry’ as open course for other majors. The elective paper chosen is ‘Polymer Chemistry’ where polymers form the material of the new millennium. In addition, the department conducts a short term course in “Research Methodology“ to impart a fundamental knowledge to do research in a systematic way.
A good number of our graduates pursue higher studies in various reputed institutions. Many academic activities like minor project works, industrial visits enrich the curriculum. The student participation in various quiz programmes , NSS and cultural activities keep a vibrant aura to the department.

The department had conducted an international webinar entitled ‘Introduction to Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence’ on 16th September, 2020.
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning have been hot topics in 2020 as AI and ML technologies increasingly find their way into everything from advanced quantum computing systems and leading-edge medical diagnostic systems to consumer electronics and “smart” personal assistants.
The list of registrants displayed participants across India and abroad. The resource person, Mr. Seby Jacob, Computer Vision Engineer, Curb Flow, Washington DC, USA shared his profound knowledge on the topic, starting from the basics of Machine Learning and integrated it into other disciplines as well. The informative and fruitful session remained interactive with the vigorous and lively performance of 180 participants including senior professors and students.
Feedback and comments pointed to an outstanding performance. E-certificates were provided to all participants.
Research Methodology is a certificate course that imparts fundamental knowledge to organise and conduct research in a systematic manner. It will help extensively for those who are intending to join research in their disciplines. The course is meant for students of all streams.
